Second Serve: The Renee Richards Story
Second Serve: The Renee Richards Story by Renee Richards
Richard seemed a perfectly normal American boy except for two things: he was unusually intelligent, and as an athlete he was superb. The Yankees scouted him. He was the captain of Yale's tennis team, went on to become a doctor and then a leading eye surgeon. He reached the rank of Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy. He married an exceptionally beautiful woman, and fathered a son.
But Richard had a secret. From the age of three he felt he was living with another person in his body, a girl whom he called Renee. Richard frantically tried to hide his secret from the world, but it became impossible as the Renee within him grew stronger, and finally threatened his life unless Richard allowed Renee to live as she wanted to, as a woman.
This is the story of how Renee, a woman, struggled to emerge from Richard's body to become Renee Richards, a professional tennis player who went on, in 1982, to coach Martina Navratilova for her triumph at Wimbledon.
