For Earthly Survival
For Earthly Survival by Ellen Bass
OUT OF PRINT
These poems, written during the first year after Ellen Bass's daughter's birth, describe "[h]er being roused in me an exquisite love, for her and for the continuation of all life, and at the same time, an excruciating agony, the threat of nuclear destruction, the fear of her pain, her death, my own, the death of all I cherish. These two feelings coalesced, feeding each other, forcing me to become more and more aware of how critical, how precarious, our life now is, and ultimately, moving me to commit more and more of my time and energies, my prayers, my work toward our earthly survival."
